Anushka Mukherjee: testimony from an international alumni

Anushka Mukherjee is a student at the University of Bonn who spent the spring semester of 2024-2025 at ENSAE Paris as part of an Erasmus+ exchange. She has now returned to her home institution to finalize her Master of Science.
Why did you choose ENSAE Paris and what do you see as its main strengths?
I chose ENSAE Paris because it offered courses in data science, public policy and finance that matched my academic interests. I also really wanted to study in Paris, a city known for its culture and energy.
What advantages have you gained from your choice of ENSAE Paris?
The courses at ENSAE were excellent. I learned a great deal, especially from the data science modules, where I significantly improved my coding skills. My presentation abilities also developed through group work and project-based assignments. Additionally, the finance and public policy courses encouraged me to engage thoroughly with academic research, and I read many papers that expanded my understanding of current issues. Overall, I feel very grateful for the high academic quality and the learning opportunities offered.
What did you think of the integration and the welcoming at ENSAE Paris?
I felt very well integrated and welcomed at ENSAE Paris. The BDI student association did an excellent job of including Erasmus students in campus life, helping us feel like part of the university community from the very beginning. The international relations team was also incredibly supportive - from the orientation tour that helped us settle in, to the farewell picnic that made the experience feel complete. I also appreciated the approachability of the professors, who were kind and responsive. Despite not having all the prerequisites for some courses, I received helpful guidance and feedback that allowed me to succeed alongside regular students.
Could you tell us about one or two key moments of your life at ENSAE and why they were important to you?
A key moment during my time at ENSAE was working on group projects with international and Erasmus students. These experiences were important because they helped me develop teamwork skills in tackling complex academic tasks and the chance to exchange ideas with people from different cultural and academic backgrounds. Another important part of my experience was attending events organized by the BDI. These events helped me feel welcomed at the university and allowed me to connect with ENSAE students outside of the classroom.
What did you enjoy the most during your stay at ENSAE Paris?
Studying at ENSAE was a very rewarding experience academically. What I enjoyed most was the wide range of courses available in data science and finance, which allowed me to strengthen my research skills. I also appreciated the everyday rhythm of campus life - especially the lunch breaks at CROUS between full days of lectures, which provided a space to relax and connect with my friends. Being included in the ENSAE newsletter and having the opportunity to host a stand during the International Evening (EXPLORE) made me feel actively involved in the student community and encouraged me to fully engage with my Erasmus experience.
What advice would you give to a student who wishes to spend one or two semesters at ENSAE Paris?
I would advise future students to secure affordable and reliable accommodation well in advance - ideally in Paris, if possible. Be prepared for the administrative process, which includes setting up health and housing insurance, opening a bank account, and finalizing your learning agreement and course selection. It can feel overwhelming at first, so it's best to approach it step by step and stay patient. Academically, ENSAE courses are challenging, and achieving good grades requires consistent effort and time management. Attendance is taken seriously, so it's important to attend all lectures and stay engaged throughout the semester.
