English- Public speaking – 1st semester


Public speaking is an important life skill, no matter your occupation. To be an effective speaker it is important to have good communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, and include good content, analysis, organization, argumentation and delivery. It is also important to be an analytical listener, to develop the ability to evaluate presentations made by others and gain confidence in speaking publicly in a variety of situations.


This course will prepare students for a variety of academic and social settings in which formal and informal presentations are essential. Students will practice techniques for different styles of speech (informative, persuasive, artifact, motivational), effective speech deliver through verbal, nonverbal and paraverbal communication, perceptions of others and strategies for overcoming speech anxiety. Students will develop good listening skills and provide constructive feedback to peers.
