Admission

Students are admitted either through a selective competitive exam or on the basis of their academic qualification. Depending on their academic background,  they can enter the Ingénieur ENSAE three-year program at different stages.

A selective competitive admission process

Given the nature of the French system of competitive examinations for admission to Grandes Écoles, these ways of admission are particularly suited to international students who have already studied in the French system, especially to those who have been in classes préparatoires.

Competitive exams are taken after a two or three-year preparatory program in the post-secondary school called classes préparatoires. International students are allowed to enroll in these French preparatory programs.  Requirements are excellent academic standards  as well as sufficient knowledge of the French language. Students admitted through these competitive exams are admitted into the first year of of the 3-year Ingénieur ENSAE program.

Three national competitive examinations are open to classes préparatoires students

  • The concours mathématiques is open to students whose basic training has been in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. About 70 students are admitted every year.
  • The concours économie et sciences sociales is open to students whose preparation has been Economics and Social Science oriented. About 20 students are admitted every year.
  • The concours économie et mathématiques is open to students whose preparation has been Economics and Mathematics oriented. About 12 students are admitted every year.

Another competitive exam is open to students holding a bachelor in science

This university admission procedure is organized jointly with other Grandes écoles. About 10 students are admitted every year. International candidates can also apply, but written and oral examinations are in French.

Admission based on application file

Students holding a Bachelor of Science or a Master 1 degree are eligible to apply for first-year ou second-year admission at ENSAE Paris. The admission process combines a written exam in Mathematics and a motivation interview. Qualifications based on previous academic results are also taken into account.

For universities abroad having a partnership with ParisTech programs, students can apply via ParisTech network. They can also be admitted through double degree programs or via the application “n+i”.

Given the strong emphasis on quantitative methods, these programs require a strong initial level in Applied Mathematics. All programs taught at ENSAE Paris require an excellent command of quantitative tools, such as Statistics, Econometrics, Stochastic Calculus, Economic Modelling. Applicants should have an excellent ranking in their department.

  • Students with an initial training in Maths or Applied Maths stand good chances of success at ENSAE Paris, provided they are aiming to develop their skills in Economics, Statistics or Finance. They can apply either for a first-year admission or into the second year of the three-year program.
  • Students with a Financial or an Economic background should be ready to invest heavily in Quantitative methods. They are more likely to be admitted into the first year of the three-year program.

Although more and more courses are delivered in English, courses are mainly taught in French. ParisTech and n+i provide training in French, before and after admission.
