The goal of ENSAE's three-year program is to provide the same basic training for all its students, whether their initial academic training was in mathematics or in economics. Equal emphasis is placed on economics and on quantitative methods. Complementary training in related subjects, such as, advanced micro- and macroeconomics, finance, and statistics is given.
This objective is accomplished in three steps corresponding to each year of the degree course.

The first year is devoted to the harmonisation of knowledge between students with different academic backgrounds. Those whose initial training was in mathematics take courses in descriptive and institutional economics. Those whose initial training has been in economics and social science take intensive courses in mathematics. Both categories of students also take introductory courses in the core disciplines taught at ENSAE : probability theory, statistics, and micro- and macroeconomics. Students whose previous training was sufficient in all three areas may be exempted from the first year.

In the second year, all students take courses in the core subjects taught at ENSAE : mathematical statistics, econometrics and time series, advanced micro- and macroeconomics, applied statistics and economics. Students also have the choice of deepening their knowledge of either statistics (i.e., advanced mathematical statistics and other aspects of statistical methods), economics (i.e., game theory and other aspects of micro- macroeconomics) or finance (Stochastic calculus, risk theory, financial instruments, simulation). Additional courses in law and social science also allow students to broaden their knowledge.

During the third year, more than one hundred courses are provided at ENSAE and each student specializes in one of the following six majors:

  • Actuarial Science
  • Market Analysis and Corporate Finance
  • Quantitative Finance
  • Quantitative Methods and Social Sciences
  • Forecasting and Economic Policy
  • Statistics

Throughout the three-year degree programme, a balance is maintained among lectures, seminars (10 to 22 students), and tutorials. Students in the third year devote 20% of their course time to tutorials, during which a researcher or professional helps them approach and treat authentic applied and/or theoretical problems.
